DIY Projects on a budget
DIY projects are one of the most effective ways to completely transform your home without the cost of hiring professionals or replacing everything with expensive new pieces. My bespoke on a budget approach is all about making smart, creative choices that help you achieve a high-end look for less, whether that means hacking flatpack furniture, updating tired surfaces, adding architectural detail or carrying out practical repairs yourself.
Over the years I have shared a huge range of DIY projects across my home, from IKEA built-ins and wall panelling to microcement projects, paint transformations, woodwork and home repairs. I’ve even won a couple of awards for them! This page brings together my best DIY ideas, grouped by topic, so you can explore the projects that suit your home, your style and your budget.
What is DIY
DIY or ‘Do it yourself’, means taking on a home decorating, building or repair job yourself rather than employing someone to do it for you.
Where should I start?
There are lots of simple DIY projects to get stuck into when you are starting.
My advice is to start small and if you don’t have access to a large toolkit, pick one that doesn’t require many tools or materials.
DIY – safety & the law
Some jobs should always be left to professionals (namely electrics, gas & plumbing).
Building regs in the UK dictate that the following (notifiable) works must be inspected & signed off unless completed by someone on the Competent Persons Scheme.
Leave the below to the professionals…
- new bathroom installations
- new or replacement boilers
- electrical work around baths and showers
- replacement windows or doors
- replacement roof
- cavity and solid wall insulation
- extensions to central heating systems (some exceptions)
- installing electricity to a shed (some exceptions)

IKEA hacks and budget built-ins
IKEA hacks are one of my favourite DIY projects on a budget as they offer ways to create a more bespoke and expensive-looking home on a budget. With a bit of creativity, careful styling and some smart DIY upgrades, basic flatpack furniture can be turned into built-ins, storage solutions and statement pieces that look far more high-end than their price tag suggests.

Microcement DIY projects
Microcement has become one of my favourite materials for DIY because it is such a versatile way to create a clean, contemporary and high-end finish. It works brilliantly for furniture, kitchens, bathrooms and smaller decorative projects, making it a really useful option if you want to modernise a space without ripping everything out.

Wall panelling and decorative wall ideas
Wall panelling is one of the most effective DIY projects on a budget to add character, texture and architectural interest to a room without the cost of major renovation. It is a brilliant DIY route to creating a bespoke on a budget home that feels more finished, more stylish and more expensive, and there are so many different approaches depending on the look you want.

My bespoke on a budget DIY approach
When it comes to DIY, I am always looking for ways to achieve the best possible result without unnecessary cost or complication. My bespoke on a budget approach is about working smarter, making thoughtful choices and focusing on the details that really make a difference.
Sometimes that means hacking flatpack furniture to create built-ins, sometimes it means refreshing a tired room with panelling or paint, and sometimes it means tackling practical repairs that improve the way a home works day to day. The common thread is creating a home that feels more personal, more considered and more high-end, without overspending.
