Home organisation: getting started

Sorting is the first step to organising your home. You need to assess what you have in order to decide what best to do with each item.  When sorting, I always have four piles, keep, chuck, donate & sell.

How to organise your home…

  • Tackle one small area at a time eg a cupboard or toy box
  • Remove toys from their boxes and packaging; cut out & keep a picture from the box with any instructions. Small pieces can be kept in reusable bags to save them from getting lost.
  • Storage boxes without lids can make tidying up quicker and kids are less likely to empty every box out if they can see what is inside.
  • If wardrobe and cupboard space is limited, under-bed storage can be a game changer.
  • If hanging space is limited, make sure every garment deserves its place. Sort clothing by type or colour and use space underneath for folded items like sweaters, scarves and wraps.
