the sky garden london

If you’re looking for free things to do in London that still feel really special, I genuinely don’t think you can beat the Sky Garden London.

As someone who commuted into London for years and often rushed straight through the city without properly stopping to enjoy it, I’ve really been trying recently to experience London differently. Less expensive tourist traps, more memorable experiences that still fit my whole bespoke on a budget approach. And honestly, this was one of the best family days out we’ve done in ages.

The fact that the tickets are completely free still amazes me because the views are absolutely incredible. Why not combine this trip with some of my other free things to do in London while you’re at it like a visit to the affordable art fair , St Martin’s in the Fields church and crypt or 5 free things to do along the Southbank

Is Sky Garden London Really Free?

the sky garden london

Yes, general admission tickets to the Sky Garden London are completely free, but you do need to book in advance.

My biggest tip would be to plan ahead because tickets disappear quickly. In my experience, you ideally want to book around a month ahead if you want a good choice of times, especially during weekends and school holidays.

This definitely isn’t one of those attractions where you can casually decide to go the night before.

My Top Money-Saving Tips for Visiting Sky Garden

Because you know me, I never do London without trying to save money where possible.

1. Use Cheap Train Ticket Deals

We used the Southeastern “Kids for a Quid” offer, where children travel for just £1 with a paying adult, which massively reduced the overall cost of the day.

If you’re travelling into London as a family, these rail offers make such a difference and can turn what would normally feel like an expensive day out into something really affordable.

2. Plan Cheap Food Around Your Trip

Rather than spending a fortune eating at tourist spots, we tied the day in with one of my favourite budget family food hacks, the PizzaExpress app offers and rewards.

I’ve already written a full blog post about the PizzaExpress £5 After School Club deal because honestly it’s one of the best affordable family dining offers I’ve found recently. Using rewards and app offers alongside free London attractions is exactly the kind of thing I love doing because you still get the experience without the huge bill at the end.

Arriving at Sky Garden

The whole experience felt incredibly organised from the moment we arrived.

Your tickets are timed and they only allow entry within a fairly short arrival window, so there’s no point turning up an hour early because they won’t let you in.

You queue initially outside before going through airport-style security. Bags are scanned and you walk through security machines before heading to the lifts.

And honestly, the lift experience alone is quite exciting.

The lifts are enormous, super fast, and incredibly efficient. Within seconds you’re suddenly transported right up into the gardens high above London.

The Views Inside Sky Garden

The moment the lift doors opened, it genuinely felt breathtaking.

You step straight out into this huge glass viewing space filled with tropical planting, layered seating areas, and panoramic views across London.

One thing I really liked was that the windows are labelled with the key landmarks you can see from each viewpoint, which is so helpful if you don’t know London particularly well.

You can slowly wander around different levels, climb the stairs to higher viewing platforms, and take in completely different angles across the city.

It honestly feels far more premium than you’d expect for a free attraction.

The Outdoor Viewing Balcony

For me, the highlight was stepping outside onto the balcony area.

The views were absolutely magnificent and on a clear day you can see for miles across London.

It’s one of those experiences that photographs never quite do justice because the scale of it in real life is incredible.

The atmosphere felt really relaxed too. People quietly taking in the views, families enjoying the experience together, couples having drinks, tourists spotting landmarks.

It felt exciting without being chaotic.

Food and Drinks at Sky Garden

Although entry itself is free, there is a café and bar inside the Sky Garden.

We decided to make the most of the experience and stopped for a drink while enjoying the views.

I had a glass of Prosecco which was around £10. Not exactly cheap, but honestly fairly reasonable considering the location and the experience. I actually expected London rooftop prices to be much worse.

You definitely don’t have to spend money once you’re inside though, which is what makes this such a brilliant budget-friendly London activity.

Is Sky Garden Good for Families?

Absolutely.

This is one of the most accessible London attractions I’ve visited.

Because everything is lift-based, it’s very manageable with children, pushchairs, or anyone who might struggle with lots of stairs.

The timed entry system also helps stop it feeling overwhelmingly crowded, which makes the whole visit much more enjoyable with kids.

Final Thoughts – Is Sky Garden Worth Visiting?

Without question, yes.

Sky Garden is one of the best free experiences in London in my opinion.

It combines incredible panoramic views, a really well-organised visitor experience, beautiful tropical gardens, and that exciting rooftop feeling, all without the huge price tag that usually comes with London attractions.

For families trying to do London on a budget, I genuinely think this is such a fantastic option.

Pair it with cheap train tickets, meal deals or restaurant app rewards, and you can create a really memorable London day out without spending a fortune.

And those are honestly my favourite kinds of days.
