Home Styling Tips: Using foraged sticks, twigs and foliage

How to style your home with foraged foliage, flowers and twigs.

At the risk of sounding weird, I love sticks! Well actually, sticks, twigs, logs and branches… and all other flowers and foliage that you can forage, bring into your home then enjoy and appreciate every day.

If foraging for flowers and foliage to style your home with is a new concept, or you would like to hear my top tips (& things to avoid) then you must pop over to my foraging page here…

Foraging for foliage FAQs

In summary, foraging is legal in the UK on public land as long as you are responsible and stick to the rules as laid out in the Countryside Act. The Woodland Trust have lots of really helpful resources in case you are interested. The main points to consider before picking or cutting anything are… are the reserves plentiful enough for me to take a small amount? Am I allowed to be here? (you must always obtain the permission of the landowner beforehand if not on a public footpath, bridlepath, byway etc). Do I know what I am picking and am I sure that the species is not poisonous or protected? Is this for my own personal use? Finally, you must never uproot a whole plant or flower as this is illegal and not considered to be foraging.

Now we’ve had ‘the talk’ lets get into the fun bit…what to do with your foraged bounty.

How to style foraged sticks and twigs in your home

There are so many ways to incorporate sticks, twigs and branches into your decor, below are a few of my favourites…

– Display tall sticks and twigs in a vase and hang seasonal decorations from them.

– Arrange logs in a log basket or holder to add some texture to a room.

– Add sticks and twigs to a shelf to add some texture and earthy colours.

– Attach long sticks and twigs to the wall to create an installation-style display. I did this by attaching chicken wire to the wall and threading the sticks and twigs through the wire, you can see this in the top right-hand corner of the picture below.

– A vase of flowers can benefit from the addition of a few twigs and sticks as they add texture and interest.

– Foraged foliage can make a nice tablescape or coffee table centrepiece.

– Forage foliage makes a nice addition to a bud vase on a bedside table.
