One of the questions I get asked most after sharing our DIY resin path project is what’s the best edging for resin paths on a budget.
The problem is that a lot of resin path edging options are surprisingly expensive, especially once you realise how many metres you actually need around curved garden paths and borders. We needed 40 metres as the path was 20 metres long and path edging is obviously needed on both sides!

Why I chose flexible edging for our resin path
Our garden path definitely doesn’t have lots of perfectly straight lines, so I needed something flexible enough to work around curves and awkward areas without having to cut loads of complicated angles.
A lot of the metal resin path edging systems looked lovely, but once I priced everything up properly it would have massively increased the overall project cost. Considering the whole point of the garden makeover was trying to make the space look more expensive on a budget, it just didn’t make sense for us.

We simply shaped the edging where we wanted the path to go, secured it into the ground and then added the gravel and resin inside the two path edges. So easy it really was the best edging for resin paths on a budget.
Because it’s easy to cut, we could quickly adjust sections as we went along without needing specialist tools. That made a huge difference because garden projects never seem to go exactly to plan once you actually start laying things out properly.
I also liked that it created enough structure to stop the gravel path spreading into the flower beds over time without looking too harsh or obvious.
We hid most of the edging with planting anyway
One thing I’d say is not to get too obsessed with finding the “perfect” edging aesthetically because once the planting fills out, you barely notice most of it anyway.
We deliberately softened the edges of our path afterwards using plants and ornamental grasses so the gravel path blended more naturally into the garden beds.
That made the whole thing feel much more relaxed and established rather than having really obvious hard borders everywhere.
Some of the plants that worked well around ours were:
- evergreen shrubs
- grasses
- lavender
- trailing plants
- drought-tolerant plants
Once everything started growing over slightly, the edging became much less visible and the garden path looked much more natural.
Why edging matters more than people think
Before doing our own garden, I probably would have underestimated how much difference edging makes to the finished garden look.
Without edging:
- gravel moves everywhere
- borders blur into the lawn
- paths lose their shape
- maintenance becomes annoying
- gardens can start looking messy quite quickly
Even budget garden edging helps create much clearer structure and makes the whole outdoor space feel more intentional.
It’s one of those small details that probably doesn’t seem exciting when you’re planning a garden project, but it massively affects the final result.
Flexible edging worked especially well for curves
I think this type of edging works best if:
- your path curves
- your garden layout is irregular
- you want softer landscaping
- you’re creating a more relaxed garden design
- you’re working on a tight budget
If you’re creating ultra-modern straight resin bound paths, you might prefer metal edging systems instead, but for our garden this softer flexible edging suited the space much better.
Our garden has evolved gradually over years rather than being one big professionally landscaped project, so slightly softer lines actually fit the overall style much more naturally.
It helped keep the whole project affordable
One of the biggest things I’ve learnt renovating both inside and outside our house is that costs creep up incredibly quickly once you start adding all the finishing details.
The edging could easily have become one of those areas where we spent far more than planned because some garden edging systems are really expensive once you start calculating larger runs.
