DIY LEGO minifigure storage idea: a stylish display frame tutorial

If you’re looking for LEGO minifigure storage ideas then there’s a good chance your house is like mine… LEGO ends up absolutely everywhere. Tiny pieces underfoot, half-finished builds on the dining table, minifigures tucked into random corners and plastic bags full of spare parts shoved into cupboards. And while there are lots of LEGO storage ideas online, I wanted something that actually looked stylish enough to display in my son’s bedroom rather than hide away.

So I decided to create my own storage solution using an open frame, a backing board and lots of LEGO bricks glued into place to create a fun, textured backdrop for displaying LEGO minifigures. It turned out to be one of my favourite DIY projects because it works both as storage and as wall art for those Lego-obsessed housemates!

What I love most about this idea is that it gives easy access to favourite figures while also helping organise growing LEGO collections in a way that actually looks intentional and decorative.

The video below shows exactly how I did it…

Why this is one of the best LEGO storage ideas

One of the biggest problems for LEGO enthusiasts is finding the balance between practical storage and display solutions. There are loads of drawer units, pull-out drawers and LEGO storage heads available, but sometimes you want a stylish storage solution that feels more personal and creative.

This project is a great way to showcase special LEGO minifigures from favourite LEGO sets while also keeping them tidy and visible. Instead of disappearing into boxes with other small pieces, the figures become part of the decor. My son was a big fan and this format has worked really well for him.

It is also ideal if you have children who constantly want easy access to their favourite characters without tipping hundreds of LEGO pieces onto the floor every five minutes.

What you need

For this project, I used:

You can use LEGO bricks in different sizes and colours depending on the look you want. I personally liked mixing black bricks with brighter pops of colour so the minifigures stood out more in the tall frame and I went fully monochrome for the Star Wars Clone Trooper ( or are they Storm troopers?!) one.

This is also a brilliant project for using up leftover bricks from old LEGO sets or random pieces that are sitting unused in tubs.

Step 1: Choose your frame

I started with a deep open frame because I wanted enough space for the lego minifigures to stand proud from the backing board without feeling cramped.

Shadow box frames work really well for this because they create depth and instantly make the finished piece feel more premium. Mine was large enough to display several rows of figures while still leaving some breathing space around them.

If you have lots of LEGO bricks and larger LEGO collections, you could easily scale this idea up into multiple matching frames across a wall.

Step 2: Create the LEGO brick backing

Next, I cut a backing board to fit tightly inside the frame and started arranging LEGO bricks across the surface before gluing anything down.

This part honestly felt a bit like creating mosaic art. I experimented with patterns, layering and colour placement until I found a layout I liked.

Once happy, I glued the bricks securely into place section by section. Make sure you glue the side of the bricks to the backing board so the mini figures can sit on the top.

The effect looked so much better than I expected and instantly transformed the frame into something playful but still surprisingly stylish.

Step 3: style with LEGO minifigures

This was definitely the fun part.

I added a mix of favourite characters from different LEGO sets and grouped them loosely by theme and colour. Some were standing traditionally while others were positioned at angles to make the display feel more dynamic.

You could organise yours in loads of ways:

  • By film or TV theme
  • By colour palette
  • By rare figures
  • By seasonal displays
  • By family favourites

It is the perfect solution for showing off special figures that would otherwise disappear into storage boxes with lots of LEGO bricks and tiny accessories.

Step 4: mount and display

Once everything had dried properly, I mounted the frame onto the wall using strong fixings.

I originally planned this for the playroom, but it looked so good that it ended up in our eldest’s bedroom instead. It feels more like framed artwork than toy storage, which is exactly what I wanted.

You could also lean smaller versions on shelves, place them above LEGO tables or incorporate them into existing drawer units and shelving systems.

Other great LEGO storage ideas to combine with this

While this display frame works brilliantly for favourite figures, I still use other storage methods for the rest of our LEGO pieces.

Some of the best ways to organise larger collections include:

  • Clear pull-out drawers for sorting by colour
  • Drawer units for spare parts
  • Plastic bags inside labelled tubs for instruction booklets
  • LEGO storage heads for quick tidy-ups
  • Rolling carts beside lego tables
  • Stackable containers for small pieces

I think the best LEGO storage ideas are always the ones that combine practicality with easy access, while still looking good in your home.

This project turned out to be such a great way to combine creativity, storage and decor in one simple DIY. Instead of hiding everything away, the lego minifigures become part of the styling of the room, which feels much more personal and fun.

If you are looking for display solutions that feel more elevated than standard toy storage, this is honestly such a great option. It is budget-friendly, completely customisable and a brilliant way to make LEGO collections feel intentionally displayed rather than cluttered.

And if you already have lots of LEGO bricks sitting unused from old LEGO sets, this is the perfect excuse to turn them into something decorative as well as practical.
