A Christmas break doesn’t always have to involve travelling far, and our festive stay at Hotel du Vin & Bistro Tunbridge Wells was a perfect reminder of that. Set within an elegant Grade II sandstone mansion on Crescent Road, this 4-star hotel sits in the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, one of England’s most charming historic spa towns (but I would say that as I live here!). Frequently appearing in trusted Tunbridge Wells hotel reviews, Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells is known for its authentic Georgian period detail, excellent service quality and relaxed luxury, but you already probably know that if you’re considering a stay, so here are the important details from someone who stays here a lot and loves the place…

Location & Surrounding Area

The hotel enjoys a prime position close to the Tunbridge Wells town centre, just a short stroll from the High Street, the Pantiles, and cultural landmarks such as Trinity Theatre, Assembly Hall Theatre, and Tunbridge Wells Museum. If you don’t want to eat in the Bistro, you can make the most of the fab restaurants in Tunbridge Wells, which are almost all within walking distance, but I definitely recommend dining in the Hotel du Vin’s restaurant at least once as it’s a gorgeously decorated room and the food is usually delicious.

Beyond the town itself, the surrounding area includes the glorious Kent countryside, with beautiful gardens, nearby historic houses, and easy access to Ashdown Forest for longer stays. The hotel also provides clear access information and recommendations on local attractions. The staff are super helpful if you need advice on what to do or where to go.

First Impressions, Check in & Service

From arrival, the experience felt smooth and welcoming. The front desk staff were genuinely helpful, offering both standard and express check-in (they email a couple of days before your stay and you can complete the whole process online so you only have to tap a card for incidentals upon arrival), with clear communication around check-in time, check-out time, and optional luggage storage.

Throughout the stay, service quality stood out. It was attentive without being intrusive and contributed hugely to the feeling of a relaxing short break. Practical details such as complimentary wifi, free Wi Fi, self-parking (£15 per night), and guidance on the use of amenities were clearly explained and easy to navigate.

Hotel du Vin Review – Rooms & Accommodation

We’ve stayed many times and tried lots of different rooms (I’ll do another post comparing the room types soon). This time we stayed in a deluxe room, though the hotel also offers, suites, junior suites, classic rooms and more modest options if you are booking a ‘cosy room’ for a shorter stay. Our room was spacious, elegant and fully air conditioned, with separate bathroom with roll-top bath and large rainfall shower. The wardrobe / cupboards were large and freestanding and included all the usuals, mini bar, robes & slippers, safe, tea & coffee making (there’s usually a nespresso machine, good news if you’re not an instant coffee fan), complimentary water and an ironing board and iron.

The room featured:

  • A very comfortable bed
  • Private bathrooms with bath and shower
  • Plasma TVs and flat screen TVs
  • Tea makers, hair dryers, and complimentary toiletries
  • A safe deposit box
  • Excellent lighting options

There is also the clear advantage of the 24 hour room service, which is particularly welcome during a festive stay.

Dining – Bistro du Vin & Bar

The hotel’s restaurant, Bistro du Vin, is one of the highlights and a key reason the Bistro Tunbridge Wells dining scene is so well regarded. The dining room is beautifully decorated, retaining authentic Georgian character while feeling warm and welcoming.

Our Christmas package included dinner in the hotel’s restaurant, with two courses from the à la carte menu plus a side each, alongside an extensive wine list, which is a signature feature of Hotel du Vin & Bistro properties. Adjacent to the dining room is the bar, featuring a wonderfully cosy atmosphere with an open fireplace that is ideal for winter evenings.

The hotel also offers afternoon tea, which is well worth considering for longer stays or special events.

Breakfast – A Standout Feature

Breakfast was a real highlight. Guests staying on a room and breakfast rate can enjoy generous full breakfasts, combining a freshly cooked option (lots of fab choices here) with a beautifully presented country spread.

Additional dishes such as charcuterie or porridge can be requested from the kitchen, and everything is served in an unrushed setting. It was a genuinely delicious breakfast and a lovely way to start the day.

Practical Information

  • Check in time is confirmed at reception
  • Check out time is clearly communicated, with a smooth check out feature
  • Free Wi Fi and complimentary wireless internet access throughout
  • Self parking available
  • Nearest airports include Gatwick
  • Easy walking distance to shops, theatres and the Pantiles

Special bits…

I absolutely love the (very wonky!) staircases – they are enormous and definitely not level, but have so much character and history!

I had THE BEST spicy margherita – completely delicious and highly moreish!

I love the rooms on the rear of the building the best as you overlook Calverley park which is lit up with the ICE Skating rink in the festive period and it makes it extra special. The rooms at the front are also lovely but the view of the police station and main road isnt quite as atmospheric!

There are always lots of deals and offers available – we particularly enjoy the ones with room, dinner & breakfast included – there’s also a “glorious getaway’ deal that includes a delicious bottle of champagne in your room upon arrival.

Screen cast – it’s great that the TVs are compatible with screen casting so you can throw your favourite Amazon Prime Video or Netflix movies or series onto the huge in-room TVs White robes

Our Christmas stay at Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells delivered everything we look for in a local luxury escape. With its elegant Georgian architecture, outstanding service, excellent dining at Bistro du Vin, and prime location in the heart of Tunbridge Wells, it remains one of the best options for a stylish, comfortable and memorable stay in Kent. Whether you are visiting for a special occasion or simply want to explore this beautiful historic spa town, it is a hotel that consistently impresses. I hope you found this hotel du vin review helpful – let me know if you did!
